Frances Call – Watercolor, Acrylic, Oil, Mixed Media

The beginning of my love of art started with my making little figures on paper placemats just for the sheer joy of “making my mark” at about the age of five. Later I discovered color when I painted seashells and sold them for 5 cents to the beachgoers passing by the front of my house. Since then my love affair with Line and Color has never ended.

Whether I paint in Acrylic, Watercolor, Oil, or Mixed Media, the trials, challenges and triumphs of art making have never dimmed the light of my passion.

Frances Call was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From a very young age, she started drawing and discovered the use of color on her own. Later she took a series of art classes in high school but soon wanted more.

Frances attended Immaculate College of Washington, DC with a minor in Art and Art History. After graduation, she married and moved to Maryland. She had four children and found her pursuits in the art world had to be put on hold because her children kept painting the basement walls in her acrylics!

In 1980, Frances went back to art school and earned her BA degree.

She belonged to several art leagues and associations: The Rockville Art League, Montgomery County Art Association, Olney Art League, Chevy Chase Art Association, and the prestigious Baltimore Watercolor Society.

Over the years, she has won numerous awards and has sold her work to private collectors in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, West Virginia, Arizona, and Florida. In 1989, she was honored by having her work hung in the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.

Frances has taught art from 1995-2016 at her Studio in Brookeville, Maryland as well other locations in Maryland. She has given workshops in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia at a summer mountain resort.

For three years, she  was also a member of a Maryland Co-Op group that helped teenagers find their way as artists.

Frances has continued her studies through workshops given by Joe Mayer, Skip Lawrence, Ted Minchin, Alex Powers, Mark Mahaffey, Catherine Lu, Fran Larson, Christopher Schink, and other teachers at the Water Media workshops in South Carolina.
